I know that most of us can’t get too excited over addresses. However, after having done some work with big data sets of buildings, I got a basic grasp of how tricky something that we all take for granted, such as addresses, can be. So I know a few people who will be pretty interested in a new product. There was a piece in the FT on a company that has launched a new addressing service. What3Words have divided
the earth’s surface — land, sea and ice caps included — into 57tn 3m-squares, each assigned a unique three-word identifier. What3Words’s entire address is just index.home.raft. Furthermore, a free smartphone app can identify any What3Words location in the world, even if the phone is offline.
In five years, lots of business premises could have additional addresses.
