There was a piece in the FT last week about the increasing ability (and desire?) of universities to monitor their students’ academic behaviour using, perhaps not surprisingly, the information gathering potential of online learning environments etc. Echoing Terminator’s Skynet, the leading software is called Skyfactor. The negative view is that it’s part of increasing surveillance and loss of privacy. The positive view is that it can provide the basis for some useful nudges to academics and students. It’s probably a bit of both.
